Mario Motta, MD, joins COLA Inc. Board of Directors

COLA Inc. announced the appointment of Mario Motta, MD, to its Board of Directors. Dr. Motta is a board-certified cardiologist from Salem, Massachusetts, and he joins COLA Inc.’s board of prominent professionals appointed by AAFP, ACP, and AMA. In addition to being appointed to COLA Inc.’s Board of Directors, Dr. Motta serves as a member of the American Medical Association’s (AMA) Board of Trustees. Dr. Motta will join existing COLA Inc. board members in making sure that the organization maintains high financial performance and provides quality services.

Dr. Motta has been active at the local and national level of organized medicine since the start of his career when we served as a student chapter president. Since 2003, Dr. Motta has served as a member of the AMA House of Delegates. Between 2008-2016, he served on the AMA Council on Science and Public Health, including serving one year on the Council’s Executive Committee.  At the local level, Dr. Motta has held a variety of leadership roles spanning nearly two decades with Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS), including serving as the Society’s President, as well as Chair and Vice Chair of the state medical society’s Committee on Legislation. In sum, in addition to caring for patients, Dr. Motta has so far dedicated his career to impacting state and national policy to the benefit of physicians and patients. 

Dr. Motta’s passion for science extends beyond medicine. He is also an avid astronomer and member of the American Association of Variable Star Observers, where he has served on its governing council and then as president from 2010 to 2012. He has also collaborated with the Harvard Center for Astrophysics and MIT, and has had numerous observations, publications and awards for his work. In 2013, the American Astronomical Society named an asteroid in his honor in recognition of his valuable research and his advocacy work on light pollution.

Dr. Motta is a 1978 graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine.
