Screening for hypertension in adults

April 28, 2021

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that clinicians screen all adults for hypertension with office blood pressure measurement, according to a final recommendation statement.

The USPSTF also recommends obtaining blood pressure measurements outside of the clinical setting for diagnostic confirmation before starting treatment.

“Without screening, most people wouldn’t know they have hypertension and could be at risk for a heart attack or stroke,” says USPSTF member John B. Wong, MD. “Clinicians can improve their patients’ health by screening all adults for hypertension.”

This conclusion reaffirms the recommendation the USPSTF made in 2015.
