In defense of temporary workersA point of care problem was addressed in a recent issue; however, the writer referred the problem as originating from an agency nurse. This reference insinuated that the problem occurred because it was an agency worker who was involved. As a lab tech working for a temporary agency, I feel that its important to make people aware that there are some very good temporary workers out there. On the other hand, I admit that just as there are permanent employees who consistently make mistakes or have unethical practices, there are also temporary workers who do the same. I personally have very high ethics when it comes to my work, and often I am expected to become productive in a short amount of time. This can mean that although I am trained, the training oftentimes is shorter than it would be for a permanent employee. I also have had to defend my work at times because when a mistake is found, it is often supposed that I, being temporary and new, made the mistake, whether I did or not. Please try not to stereotype temporary workers. Our jobs are not all glamour and glitz. We are often away from family and friends during the holidays, and travel these days can be trying at best. Many of us choose to do temporary work simply because its in our nature to travel, not because we cant obtain permanent work or because our work ethics are bad.Kathy Sakas,
