Hospital quality influences patients’ doctor choices, Healthgrades says

Four in five patients consider hospital quality when looking for a doctor, and about two-thirds would favor a doctor affiliated with a higher-rated hospital when choosing between providers for a procedure.

Four out of every five patients consider a hospital’s quality when looking for a doctor, according to Healthgrades. The company recently released its 2027 Specialty Excellence Awards, Outpatient Awards and Specialty State Rankings and new research regarding patient opinion on hospital quality.

About two-thirds of patients told Healthgrades they’d choose a doctor who works at a hospital with higher quality ratings if they’re between two doctors for an upcoming procedure. The company’s awards recognize exceptional clinical performance and patient care in their respected categories from 2023-2025.

It is important to note that, according to Healthgrades research, more than 227,000 lives might’ve been saved and more than 158,000 complications might’ve been avoided if all hospitals performed at the five-star level during the grading period.

The full list of award recipients and methodology can be found on Healthgrades’ website.
