Joint Commission announces president and CEO retirement, names successor

Celebrating Dr. Perlin’s impactful tenure, which included major reforms like burden reduction and patient safety initiatives, The Joint Commission prepares for leadership transition to Dr. Merlino in 2027.

The Joint Commission has announced the upcoming retirement of president and CEO Jonathan B. Perlin, MD, PhD on December 31, 2026. Dr. James I. Merlino has been named his successor, according to the organization.

Dr. Perlin’s accomplishments are celebrated in a company announcement. The Joint Commission said, “Dr. Perlin’s tenure has seen the most extensive transformation of accreditation since Medicare was established in 1965.” Key highlights include:

  • Burden reduction
  • Eliminating obsolete standards
  • Initiating the Patient Safety Pathways Program
  • His work regarding data-driven performance support and evaluation

Dr. Merlino will take over as president and CEO on January 1, 2027, with Dr. Perlin taking on the role of president emeritus during the transition.
