Copan Diagnostics announced the appointment of Dr. Hema Kapoor as Director of Medical and Scientific Affairs for the Americas, succeeding Dr. Susan Sharp, who will retire in September following more than three decades of distinguished service to clinical microbiology.
Dr. Sharp joined Copan in 2018, after an illustrious career spanning over 30 years as a clinical microbiologist, educator, and industry leader. She previously served as Chief of the Microbiology at Kaiser Permanente and held leadership roles in the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), including Chair of the Committee on Laboratory Practices and Past President. A Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM) and Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, Dr. Sharp has been recognized with ASM’s highest clinical honor, the bioMérieux Sonnenwirth Award, and the ABMM Professional Recognition Award. At Copan, her leadership has been defined by keen insight, and a steadfast advocacy for advancing microbiology.

Dr. Hema Kapoor brings more than two decades of experience in clinical diagnostics, infectious diseases, and medical affairs. Before joining Copan, she spent nearly 20 years at Quest Diagnostics, most recently as Senior Medical
Director of Medical Affairs, where she led scientific strategy for Infectious Diseases and Immunology. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she led national preparedness efforts and was recognized by the Gold Foundation for her outstanding leadership. Dr. Kapoor is a Diplomate of the ABMM and an ASCP-certified Specialist in Microbiology, with postdoctoral training at both Mayo Clinic and All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Her background spans hospital microbiology, laboratory operations, research and development, and health equity initiatives.
In her new role, Dr. Kapoor will oversee Copan’s scientific and medical strategy in the Americas, foster collaborative research, and continue the company's mission of delivering high-quality, evidence-based solutions for the laboratory community.
