The American Medical Association (AMA) has published guidance with Manatt Health regarding augmented intelligence (AI) best practices in healthcare. AMA hopes to spotlight AI as a tool for healthcare professionals to use by using the term “augmented intelligence.”

AMA Contributing News Writer Tanya Albert Henry said in a release, “It is important that healthcare organizations set up a governance system to manage and guide how that technology will be used to help physicians, patients and others in the organization.” The AMA STEPS Forward toolkit, “Governance for Augmented Intelligence,” aims to help health systems “establish a governance framework to implement, manage and scale AI solutions.”

The following strategies to “establish AI governance” as outlined in the toolkit are:

1.       Holding the executive team accountable and form a “governance structure”

2.       Initiate an AI working group

3.       Review present policies and procedures

4.       Establish new AI policies and procedures

5.       Outline “project intake, vendor evaluation and assessment processes”

6.       Revise “standard planning and implementation processes”

7.       Create surveillance processes

8.       Support “AI organizational readiness”
