The World Health Organization (WHO) is calling for the inclusion of pregnant and lactating women in tuberculosis (TB) studies. The goal of this action is to “ensure equitable access to TB innovations for all, including those most at risk,” according to a release.
WHO published a call to action document, asking the industry to:
Boost TB surveillance and reporting in pregnant and postpartum patients.
Launch vaccine studies for pregnant patients.
Include “pregnant and lactating women in all stages of TB drug trials” and in “adult TB vaccine research for candidates with a favorable risk-benefit profile and plan for rollout and monitoring.”
Work to reduce health inequities and legal and regulatory concerns.
