WHO takes action to better understand COVID-19

June 30, 2025

The World Health Organization (WHO) Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO) released an analysis titled “Independent assessment of the origins of SARS‑CoV‑2.”

The document builds upon WHO’s original 2022 report to better understand the source of COVID-19. According to SAGO, “much of the information needed to evaluate fully all hypotheses has not been provided.”

According to a release, WHO calls on China to share relevant information to aid their analysis like “hundreds of genetic sequences from individuals with COVID-19 early in the pandemic, more detailed information about the animals sold at markets in Wuhan, and information on work done and biosafety conditions at laboratories in Wuhan.”

They have yet to receive the information. The current report lists recommendations based on available information and studies. SAGO hopes the paper will help global quality of life and stop future pandemics.
