The Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine has published the first U.S. pathology- and laboratory medicine-focused guidance for providing gender diverse individuals with quality care.

The recommendations are mostly for adult care, and center on:

  • Reference intervals and interpreting laboratory test results that have been affected by gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) usage, particularly for individuals that have consistently received GAHT for six months or more.
  • Transfusion medicine
  • Autopsies
  • Histology
  • Informatics

The document emphasizes that laboratory professionals must be committed to health equity. They authors call for personalized approaches that are patient-centered, respectful, and inclusive. They said, “Establishing well-defined thresholds tied to clinical outcomes will help clinicians better assess treatment efficacy and tailor care appropriately. Above all, the future of transgender healthcare in pathology and laboratory medicine depends on a shared commitment to scientific integrity, compassion, and inclusion.”
