The 2025 report shows significant progress in expanding safe blood supplies worldwide, with increased voluntary donations, but highlights ongoing disparities and gaps in quality control and regulation across countries.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has published their 2025 edition of Global status report on blood safety and availability, according to a release.
Among the findings from 97% of the world's population, WHO found that while the safe blood supply is expanding, many countries are still experiencing disparities.
Key findings:
85% of blood donations are from volunteer donors.
19% more people are donating blood compared to 2013.
About 1/3 of blood donations go to high-income countries.
Twenty-four countries experienced blood donation rates below 0.5% of their population.
“Only 64% of countries report systems for regular inspection of blood services.”
About 1/3 of countries don’t have quality control legislation in place.
