FDA approves bemotrizinol for sunscreen

Bemotrizinol, a sunscreen ingredient used internationally for years, has received FDA approval, expanding options for sun protection with a new, effective ingredient.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved bemotrizinol for use in sunscreen. This is the first time in two decades that a new active ingredient has been permitted for over-the-counter sunscreen, according to the FDA.

The agency deemed the ingredient “generally recognized as safe and effective (GRASE)” for individuals over the age of six months. Countries outside the U.S., including Europe have used bemotrizinol in sunscreen for years.
