Reportable Events and Sentinel Events Lists to be aligned by Joint Commission and NQF, organizations say

The Joint Commission and NQF are partnering to unify their Sentinel Events and Serious Reportable Events lists, simplifying safety reporting and improving patient care quality across healthcare organizations starting January 2027.

To enhance patient safety, the Joint Commission and the National Quality Forum (NQF) have partnered, aligning their Sentinel Events and Serious Reportable Events lists, according to an announcement.

The organizations aim to simplify these processes and remove “the need to maintain separate safety measurement frameworks.” They published guidelines regarding the changes titled, “Aligning Patient Safety Event Reporting.” The Joint Commission said they will begin implementing the new list on January 1, 2027. “across all accredited organizations domestic and international,” aiding organizations with the transition.

Workforce safety measures are also being added to the list, protecting healthcare professionals.
