The American Red Cross has announced a severe blood shortage, according to a January 20th release. This is attributed to the current supply declining by 35% in a month due to flu viruses surging and winter weather.

The organization is urgently calling for donors to step up, particularly those with blood types O, A negative and B negative. Red Cross executive medical director Dr. Courtney Lawrence emphasized in a press release, “Every person’s blood donation can help save lives — plus you help ease the tremendous burden on our doctors and nurses, allowing them to focus on caring for patients.”

Information regarding setting up an appointment can be found on the organization’s website. Prospective donors can also call 1-800-RED CROSS.
