Over the last several weeks, Medical Laboratory Observer asked our readers to share their wisdom with the new generation of laboratory professionals. We received over 80 responses containing valuable insights regarding workflow, mentorship, professional growth, and lab culture.

When asked “What is one piece of advice you would give to new clinical lab professionals:”

  • 6% answered “don’t be afraid to make mistakes—as long as you learn from them.”
  • 13% said to double-check everything—accuracy is everything in the lab.
  • 19% emphasized to communicate clearly with your team—it improves safety and outcomes.
  • 39% reminded new laboratory professionals that their work directly impacts patient care—take pride in it.

Additionally, 24% chose to write in their own responses. Here is what they shared:

  • Insist that your hospital treat you like a professional and not a factory worker.
  • Document-document-document. It’s very important to take great notes and documentation when working in the lab; it creates smoother workflows, handoffs, and is helpful when troubleshooting issues. Most importantly, it’s the foundation of high quality and accurate results.
  • Everything you do with diligence and detail will give you career path options.
  • All of the above!
  • Quality over quantity!
  • Perform your work as if every specimen you test belongs to a family member or loved one.
  • Change is inevitable. If you aren't changing, you are falling behind. Don't be afraid of it.
  • Learn about regulatory standards and requirements. Why we do what we do.
  • Do not be afraid to question results. You are the expert.
  • Treat each patient as if they are one of your loved ones.
  • Working in the lab involves continuous learning. Learn from everyone - seasoned and newbies.
  • Learn and use error prevention tools such as STAR.
  • Develop rapport w/any team member, a bonus would be a senior/supervisor.
  • Be professional. Follow dress code. Be honest.
  • One superpower lab scientist’s share is patten recognition. It’s a feature, not a bug. Embrace and use that talent!
  • Work as a team member, never lose your humility, admit your errors.
  • WHEN IN DOUBT, ASK.
  • The Quality Manager/team is your friend. Their jobs and activities make your job easier in the long run.

Thank you to everyone that responded to our poll. Your experience matters, and we appreciate all you do for patient care.
