A group of UTHealth Houston researchers are working to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot to help older patients navigate care conversations with their clinicians. They’ve been granted $1.3 million from the John A. Hartford Foundation Board of Trustees for the project, according to a news release by Venus Islas.

The funding will span over 18 months and is part of a broader initiative by the John A. Hartford Foundation Board of Trustees to enhance care for older adults. The platform UTHealth Houston develops will help older adults pinpoint their health priorities so they can discuss them with their clinicians. It will provide patients with conversation guidelines.

Aanand Naik, MD shared the following finding from an early study of the tool with Islas, stating that the platform is empowering patients. “Patients report less treatment burden and more alignment of their capubre with their priorities through this process."
