Young adults prefer self STI testing at home

New University of Michigan survey.
Feb. 11, 2025

The University of Michigan conducted a survey asking adolescents and young adults their sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing preferences.

The survey found that most people aged 14-24 prefer self-testing at home. Reasons included more privacy, avoiding stigma, and comfort.

According to a release, “ninety one percent of survey participants ages 14-24 indicated that they’d use free STI self-collection kits.” Only 6% of respondents stated that they would not use the self-collection kits. They were worried about test precision and awkwardness.

The survey was conducted by text and included 763 respondents.
