bioMérieux receives WHO Emergency Use Listing for rapid Ebola diagnostic panel

bioMérieux's BIOFIRE Global Fever Special Pathogens Panel has received WHO EUL approval, enabling rapid detection of Ebola and other pathogens during the DRC outbreak, aiding public health efforts.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has awarded bioMérieux Emergency Use Listing (EUL) for the BIOFIRE Global Fever Special Pathogens Panel to help address the Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and neighboring countries, according to an announcement.

There is currently no specific treatment or licensed vaccine against the Bundibugyo strain, bioMérieux said, and “fast and accurate diagnostic testing exists and remains the first line of public health action to identify suspected cases, guide patient management, support contact tracing and help limit disease transmission.”

The test is manufactured by BioFire Defense, LLC, a bioMérieux company.

Key features:

  • Can simultaneously test for 16 pathogens from a single whole blood sample
  • Results in one hour
  • Can test for multiple Ebola viruses, malaria parasites, Marburg virus, West Nile virus and Lassa virus
  • Can detect Bundibugyo ebolavirus
