Possible new opioid use disorder treatment incoming
The NIH is set to conduct the first human clinical trial of Mitragynine, a compound derived from Mitragyna speciosa, to evaluate its effectiveness in treating opioid use disorder and managing withdrawal symptoms.
Mitragynine might become a new treatment for opioid use disorder if validated by an upcoming phase I clinical trial, according to an announcement. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will lead the trial.
This comes after receiving Investigational New Drug (IND) acceptance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The drug comes from Mitragyna speciosa and was developed by the NIH and the University of Florida. It can aid with opioid withdrawal and pain, etc. The upcoming trial will be the first time this drug is tested on humans.
