The University of California San Diego School of Medicine and UC San Diego Health, with UC San Francisco and UCSF Health have taken action to advance maternal-fetal care by joining the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units (MFMU) Network, according to an announcement.
The goal of this action is to broaden accessibility to and better “obstetric care for patients in Southern California.” The universities will conduct research to decrease maternal mortality and pregnancy, birth, and postpartum complications. This includes “reducing prematurity birth rates; low-birth weight in newborns; infant mortality rates and other life-threatening illnesses.”
Clinical trials conducted through the MFMU Network will assess pregnancy and lactation medication safety and efficacy, medication for the prevention of premature deliveries, and more, according to UC San Diego Health.
