The University of Michigan has published the results of its most recent Monitoring the Future survey. The findings are summarized in a press release.
According to the authors, “Adolescent drug use since the pandemic has charted a historically unique path.” Among the findings:
16% more eighth graders reported vaping flavored marijuana in 2024 than in 2021.
12% more 10th graders reported vaping flavored marijuana in 2024 than in 2021.
High school seniors’ flavored marijuana vaping jumped 14%.
Most adolescents that smoke preferred smoking marijuana in vape form, flavored or not.
The researchers attribute rising marijuana vape usage to the attractive flavoring and the fact that the smell is easier to hide than traditional marijuana. They call for “targeted policies, interventions and educational campaigns to address and mitigate this escalating concern among young people.”
