WHO classifies cholera as global threat

Sept. 15, 2025

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified cholera as a “very high” global risk in a September 12 press release, based on its global cholera statistics for 2024, which were released on September 5, 2025.

Key findings:

  • Confirmed cases increased by 5%.
  • Cholera-related deaths jumped 50%.
  • 15 more countries reported experiencing cholera than in 2023.
  • Most burden centered in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
  • Comoros experienced their first outbreak in 15 years.
  • 25% of reported deaths did not happen in a health facility.
  • Supply shortages are affecting vaccine distribution.

WHO emphasized that this disease is both curable and preventable. They attribute the current outbreaks to “conflict, climate change, population displacement, and long-term deficiencies in water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure.” They call for more accessible care, hygiene, and vaccines, and “to strengthen work with communities.” They are also calling for community disease education and safer water.
