American’s attitudes toward Alzheimer’s testing

May 9, 2025

With new Alzheimer's biomarker tests being discovered, the Alzheimer's Association asked Americans for their outlook and published the findings in a Special Report.

The survey found:

·       Nearly all Americans think early Alzheimer’s diagnosis is essential.

·       Over half believe “cognitive screening for Alzheimer’s or other dementia” is a critical aspect of prevention.

·       Most Americans (4 in 5, according to the report) reported wanting an Alzheimer’s diagnosis before symptoms arise.

·       Several respondents (80%) “said they would ask for a simple medical test rather than wait for their doctor to suggest it; this was consistent across all populations surveyed.”

·       About three fourths (73%) are interested in treatment and said accessibility would impact their feelings about early diagnosis.

·       Respondents want to receive Alzheimer's disease and treatment education post-diagnosis.

Top hesitations toward testing included insurance coverage, accuracy, being able to perform regular daily tasks, and cost.
