New study measures current COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness

Research findings indicate that the updated COVID-19 vaccines for 2025-2026 provide substantial protection against severe illness, emphasizing the importance of vaccination to prevent hospitalizations and emergency care visits.

Recently published research measured the effectiveness of the 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccines. The study is published in JAMA Network Open.

The researchers evaluated more than 85,000 emergency department and urgent care visits and more than 26,000 hospitalizations in adults considered immunocompetent. Each participant was seen for a COVID-19like illness.

According to the study results, the 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccination protected immunocompetent adults from COVID-19associated ED/UC encounters by 50% and COVID-19associated hospitalization by 55%. The authors concluded their paper with a recommendation for the COVID-19 vaccine stating, “Adults can reduce their likelihood of severe COVID-19–associated outcomes by obtaining a 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccination.”
