More young adults are taking measures to prevent HIV

May 28, 2025

A new University of Michigan Medical School study discovered that the number of young adults living in the U.S. taking medicine to prevent HIV is at an all-time high, according to a release.

The researchers analyzed data from adults 18-25 in 2016-2023.

Key findings:

·       PrEP use jumped from 26/100,000 to more than 208/100,000 in this age group.

·       The higher end of the age group (22-25) filled more prescriptions than the lower end.

·       People did not consistently refill their prescriptions.

·       The number of young adults taking PrEP in the southern U.S. (a high-risk area) is growing.

It is noted that “the study also suggests that healthcare providers and public health agencies could do more to promote consistent use of these medications.”
