Healthcare professionals are utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) as a diagnostic aid more and more. Now, UCLA has conducted a number of studies testing the reliability of their new AI tool, Unfold AI, to enhance prostate cancer precision treatment.
Unfold AI works by combining “MRI data with biopsy results to generate a detailed, 3D map of where cancer sits inside the prostate,” according to UCLA. The scientists analyzed the tool in three studies. Key findings:
- Unfold AI was able to notify physicians which patients would be the best candidates for partial gland cryoablation. It created precise maps of 204 patient tumors, allowing doctors to evaluate tumor volume and use it to forecast treatment success. Additionally, “Using this tumor volume threshold as a criterion could have prevented 72% of treatment failures, the researchers reported.”
- Unfold AI proved to determine how advanced prostate cancer is in patients “more accurately than conventional methods, making predictions of tumor size 45 times more precise than doctors’ assessments alone.”
- Unfold AI performed better than MRI when forecasting seminal vesicle invasion in patients.
All three studies point to more personalized treatment and improved outcomes for prostate cancer patients.
