Doubling down on childhood cancer research

Oct. 7, 2025

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) doubled funding for the Childhood Cancer Data Initiative at the National Cancer Institute in an announcement, following President Donald Trump’s September 30 executive order.

HHS will utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to aid them in their endeavor to prevent and treat childhood cancer. According to HHS, they will use it to “maximize the potential for electronic health record and claims data to inform research and clinical trial design.” They emphasized that, “Parents will remain in control of their child’s health information as the data is used to benefit patients and researchers.”

The Executive Order, ‘Unlocking Cures for Pediatric Cancer With Artificial Intelligence,’ further details how AI will be used to achieve the goal of combatting childhood cancer, including for timely diagnosis and pinpointing potential cures/treatment pathways.
