CDC warns of dramatic increase in drug-resistant bacteria

Sept. 24, 2025

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released a report detailing the threat of NDM-producing carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (NDM-CRE), according to a release. The paper is published in Annals of Internal Medicine.

Infections from NDM-CRE in the U.S. jumped more than 460% in four years (2019-2023), according to the CDC. Over 12,000 cases happened in 2020 alone. The CDC emphasized the importance of equipping laboratories and healthcare providers with the right testing and treatment tools.

It is still unknown why the U.S. is experiencing this sudden increase in NDM-CRE. The CDC said relaxed infection control measures and restricted testing access could be contributing to it.
