He received his PhD in Microbiology at UCLA, postgraduate training in Clinical Microbiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and was director of clinical microbiology laboratories (Washington University of St. Louis, University of Maryland, and National Institutes of Health) for more than 35 years.
