Blood-banking/Collection/Donor and Phlebotomy
Reduce risk of injuries and contamination
Frequently, tube segments on a blood bag are opened by means of inappropriate devices such as knives or scissors, which involve a high risk of exposure to injuries and contamination. The Tube Segment Opener provides safe and easy access to blood-bag tube segments. This product is simple to use and virtually eliminates the risk of cross contamination between samples. Options are available for both 10-mm and 12-mm diameter tubes. The device safely pierces tube segments for access to samples. The opener also contains a collection reservoir for typing systems that require pipetting of micro sample volumes.

Test-tube management
For confident test-tube management throughout the entire blood-collection process, the TiMO Tube Management Organizer securely holds and organizes test tubes before, during, and after blood collection. TiMO provides a simple mechanism to link the donor, blood-sample test tubes, and collection container to reduce the potential of sample tube mix-up incidents. Test tubes remain in the organizer while the blood samples are collected, and the clear flexible material allows the donor identification bar codes to be clearly read and recorded without removing the test tubes.

Hand-held blood-donor screening
Designed for blood banks, the UltraCrit hand-held hematocrit/hemoglobin measurement device uses ultrasound technology to confirm that donors are accurately accepted or deferred. The system uses a single-use cuvette and a drop of blood. The measurement process takes about 30 seconds, and no extensive training is required. The system standardizes all collections — whole blood, apheresis, and double red cells — by providing a hematocrit value. Optional quality-control (QC) material comes in single use vials of low, normal, and high levels; requires no refrigeration or mixing; and is non-biohazardous. The device can be run on A/C or D/C power and has a USB port for connectivity to donor software programs.

Antibody information database
The National Patient Antibody Registry (NPAR), a HIPAA-compliant, secure database service, stores patient-antibody information from participating facilities. A user-friendly interface allows blood-bank technologists to quickly locate and retrieve a patient’s critical blood-bank records. NPAR provides instant access to patient-antibody histories, enabling faster provisioning of blood products, and increased productivity with better management of reagents. Use of the registry also reduces the risk of hemolytic reactions. A smart-search feature identifies potential matches regardless of spelling variations and incomplete records. NPAR includes an online reference library of antibody information based on the AABB Technical Manual.

Pneumatic-tube tracking system
Pevco Tracker increases accountability and visibility of pneumatic-tube system transactions enabling carriers containing blood products to be tracked instantly from sender to receiver. The system offers status messages to alert lab personnel when an item has left the blood bank and when it arrives at its destination. Each step of the transaction is time-stamped, so the time from origin to destination is available in real time. Lab staff can review transaction records to gain insight into performance. Users decide how many elements of a pneumatic-tube transaction they need to capture, including what was sent, when it was sent, when it arrived, where it arrived, and who received it.

Transfusion management
Sunquest Transfusion Manager is a software application that assists laboratories in matching blood products to recipients, positively identifying transfusion recipients, recording recipient-transfusion information, and recording transfusion reactions and caregiver comments. Operating on a portable, hand-held device or portable PC with or without wireless communication, the process begins with a blood-product order request and positive patient ID at specimen collection — which includes label generation at the point of care. Processing of the patient’s specimen and the blood product may then be automated with instrument interfacing and electronic cross match. Upon blood-product issue, there is another requirement for positive patient identification at transfusion to eliminate the chance for error. The loop is closed once the care provider completes the transfusion and documents the patient’s vitals.
