Digital-pathology software
Virtuoso software offers pathologists the ability to create a worklist that gives them the flexibility to work on cases in their desired order; the option to include gross images in case reports; synchronized image viewing for comparing serial sections on a case with different markers; and role-based portals to ensure that individual needs are met for each person in the workflow. Telepathology features enable review, real-time collaboration, and case-review guidance. Virtuoso works with the iScan Coreo Au scanner.

Measure and audit processes for LEAN analysis
An enhanced tracking, audit, and quality-measurement module for Progeny improves workflow in anatomic-pathology and cytology laboratories. This is a fully integrated solution for comprehensive materials tracking, not a middleware or third-party separate system. This system allows users to track any step in the workflow process, including automated tracking of all normal workflow, as well as user-defined tracking for targeted problem areas. With each step in the workflow process, the user is able to quickly document alert situations and enter quality-control comments on the relevant specimen, block, or slide — all at the touch of a button. Tracking steps may be permanent or temporary, and all information is readily available to appropriate staff in a single, easy to read, inquiry display.

Post-process sample reidentification
B-498 Re-Identify Tissue Cassette labels are designed for the re-identification of tissue cassettes. Constructed of vinyl cloth, these labels can be applied post-process to the front, top, and sides of a tissue cassette, directly on the cassette or on top of another label. They adhere to both the plastic tissue cassette and pure paraffin wax, and stay adhered in temperatures as low as -40°C (-80°C on the front of the cassette). Labels can be thermal-transfer printed with linear or 2D barcodes and can easily be removed from the liner and the cassette with or without gloves. The labels are available in both 1-inch and 3-inch roll cores in three different sizes for the front, top, and sides of a tissue block.

High-speed digital slide scanner

The iScan Coreo Au is a high-speed scanner that enables digital- pathology applications such as image analysis, telepathology, remote microscopy, and education. The system allows walkaway scanning of up to 160 slides, and includes an automated turret with multiple objectives, volume scan (z-stacked) images with multiple planes, and iScan Coreo Au Live, an application supporting remote microscopy and collaboration. The scanner includes a 5.5-inch full-color LCD display, can read 1D and 2D bar codes, and hide slide label information in thumbnails and scans to maintain patient anonymity. The autoscan feature enables automated bar-code reading, tissue identification, autofocus, scanning, and image compression supporting JPG, BIF, and TIF formats. Users can select scan areas for single or batched slides in automatic or manual mode.

Pathology information system

Orchard Pathology is a comprehensive information system designed to handle the complexities of clinical, molecular, and pathology testing and reporting. The system can be used as a stand-alone system for anatomic and molecular testing or combined with Orchard Harvest LIS to integrate clinical testing. The shared database used by these systems provides access to the patient’s entire history and enables the consolidation of clinical results to the cytology or pathology report. Image-management tools enable users to link digital images, annotated diagrams, and scanned documents to case worksheets and incorporate them onto patient reports. Information on each report is stored in discrete data fields that enhance the electronic medical record (EMR) integration and simplify the process to mine data for evaluations, correlation studies, quality assurance, regulatory, statistical, and other management reports.

Digital-pathology workstation system

The Crescendo Digital Pathology Workstation (DPW) is an integrated platform that brings together diagnostic information from all relevant sources. The DPW polls data from silos such as laboratory information systems, radiology picture archiving and communication systems, gross images, online references, and differential patient information. The user can simultaneously view multiple slide images and navigate around the images to compare the same serial sections of a tissue sample stained with different markers, or to compare against past images.

Durable tissue-specimen labeling system

The
BSP31 Label Attachment System gives labs the ability to
permanently attach labels to tissue cassettes — resulting in more
accurate specimen tracking and sample management. The labeling solution
for histology and anatomic-pathology labs features a label-attachment
system and durable labels that withstand tissue processing, and last up
to 20 years in storage. After a specimen label has been applied to a
cassette, the cassette is inserted into the BSP31, where four small heat
probes pierce through the corners of the label and cassette. The heat
melts the cassette’s plastic into rivets, which then permanently hold
the label in place. The labeling system integrates with label design and
printing software that interfaces with the lab’s current LIS.

Simplified in situ hybridization solution
With
RISH, rapid in situ hybridization, a chromogenic ISH
technology, the proprietary DNA probe technology ensures high
specificity and accuracy for the mRNA target in a simple two-hour,
five-step procedure. The product has no high temperature denaturation
step or RNase solutions, and labware requirements, overnight
hybridization and stringent wash conditions are eliminated. The result
is clear, with virtually no background. The signal is easily visualized
under brightfield microscopy, along with the tissue morphology on a
single slide. Interpretation is simplified with familiar chromogenic
signal and tissue morphology. Sensitive probes include: Epstein-Barr
encoded RNA (EBER), kappa light chain, lambda light chain, dual
kappa/lambda, IgA-alpha heavy chain, IgG-gamma heavy chain, IgM-mu heavy
chain, and ribosomal RNA (positive control). Additional RISH probes
under development include alpha-fetoprotein, calcitonin,
cytomegalovirus, gastrin, insulin, pancreatic peptide, and more.
